The silly mistakes we made so far

This is possibly the most important page of this website, cause it shows you all the stupid things we have done, and you should avoid. It is hard to draw some lessons during this early stage. But obviously, we haven't done many clever things up to now, considering the fact our greed-o-meter shows an amount of money that is to silly to mention.

What we have been trying to do is offer the public some honest and interesting content. Now it takes a lot of time to make a website that is worth visiting. And it also takes a lot of time to make the public aware of such a website. Perhaps content is not always the answer. There are websites that have almost no original content, but draw thousands of visitors every day.

We have been told of a website in the Netherlands that offers nothing more than one page with about a hundred links to local banks, airlines, retailers, newspapers, etcetera. It receives over 100,000 visitors every day! Part of the secret of that website is choosing the correct URL. Translated in English their URL is someting like www.startingpage.com. At first they got some attention from local newspapers and magazines, and by now half of the Dutch Internet community start their browser with this page with links. We do not understand this completely, but appearently, sometimes it is much more clever to just facilitate people with a very simple service, than to bring them high-quality content you have been working on for months.

So lesson nr. 1 is; Do not focus all your projects on high-quality content. It will cost you loads of time to develop and maintain these projects. Sometimes it pays to keep it quick and simple, and to bring the public a very simple no-content service.
